Warm-toned overhead flat-lay of theater ephemera: vintage playbills, handwritten notes, and a fountain pen on dark wood

The Origins of People Productions

People Productions was founded with a clear mission: to bring African American theatre to Salt Lake City and create a lasting platform for Black voices in the performing arts. Since its establishment, the organization has grown into Utah's premier African American themed theatre company, earning recognition as a Non-Profit 501(c)(3) organization in 2006 and membership in the Utah Non-Profits Association.

The founding members shared a vision of community-centered storytelling — producing works that reflect the depth and diversity of the African American experience. Their dedication laid the groundwork for over a decade of productions, educational programs, and cultural celebration in the Salt Lake Valley.

Key Individuals

The founders brought together experience in theatre direction, performance, arts education, and community organizing. Their collective effort established the artistic and organizational foundation that continues to guide People Productions today. Through their leadership, the company has staged works by playwrights including August Wilson and developed original productions such as An Urban Carol, directed by founding member Yolanda Wood.

These individuals remain central to the identity of People Productions, and their legacy is reflected in every program, festival, and performance the organization undertakes.
